Okay, so I want to share with you my experience of calling myself a «brand strategist» and how it can possibly hurt you in the long run.

Keep in mind, this does not mean you should change your job title ☝

I don’t care what you call yourself.

Just be clear as to what you will be delivering your clients (this is where I might have gone wrong, although it was that buzzword «strategist» that got me into this in the first place).

In the last year or two, I’ve seen a huge increase in brand strategist (myself included) 📈

I’ve been struggling with this word «strategy» for a while now and I’m not sure it’s being used correctly.

Promising a client strategy and delivering deep discovery—is not a strategy ❌

It is your strategy to deliver more effective design solutions, sure.

We all use strategy in our day to day life.

I have a strategy to brush my teeth.

Although I don’t tell people I’m a toothbrush strategist.

This isn’t an attack towards brand strategists.

I know a lot of amazing brand strategists who effectively give their clients clear & thoughtful strategies to help achieve their business goals.

I just want you to be conscious of this and how it CAN be misleading to your clients.

So please, be careful. 😄

The word "Strategist" almost got me into big trouble.

I was a designer using discovery frameworks to deliver better design results for my clients.

Somewhere along the way I was led to believe that I was delivering strategy.

Then I landed a big brand who was expecting strategy.

Except I was delivering more effective design.

Luckily I got out in time. While I was using a form of strategy, it was not a comprehensive business strategy. What I was calling "brand strategy" was actually part of my process to better understand their biz & brand to deliver more effective design solutions.

I'm not the "job title police". Just be careful.

The wrong title could lead you to over promise & under deliver.
