Great leaders are mentored.

Great mentors create great leaders.

Mentors and mentoring are vital for greatness.

Sir Freddie Laker, Mike Markkula, Eric Schmidt, Billy Solomon, Warren Buffet and Steve Jobs. Some you may recognize, others you may not.

These were the mentors for Sir Richard Branson, Steve Jobs, Larry Page + Sergey Brin, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerburg.

Follow the three steps to great mentoring. Tell me how it goes.

Having a Mentor is valuable, everyone needs a coach. Being a Mentor is nothing short of life altering. Not only changing the mentee's life, but the Mentor's as well.

3 steps to being a great mentor

M1: listen well As Mentors, our first priority is to listen diligently and intentionally, so that we can lead and learn.
Listening is the core of any healthy relationship, and to be a great mentor you must listen well and seek to fully understand your mentee's situation.
Adversely, be open to learning from your young Padawan, as they often have fresh perspectives.

M2: BE TACTICAL As Mentors we need to lead tactically and advise strategically, with empathy.
Offer clear, specific steps for your mentee to learn, understanding where they are in their journey.
Give actionable advice. Allow the mentor to see a plan, but not necessarily all of it. Help them to set and achieve micro goals along your journey together.

M3: STEP BACK One amazing thing all of my mentors have shown me over the years is the power of purposefully stepping back.
We need to leave room for Mentees to take our guidance and come to their own conclusions, at their own pace.
We learn best when we take ownership of an idea and take action. If we never leave room for the mentee to do that, they'll never learn to be independant thinkers.
